CSIRO - Parkes Observatory

When visiting with family you should definitely go to the visitor discovery centre to check out the one of the most popular attractions in the town. If you are interested in exploring the world of astronomy, the centre provides hands on exhibits, great displays and a 3D theatre.

Don’t miss out on visiting the CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope which was the start of the movie “The Dish”. The equipment is 20km north of Parkes at the CSIRO - Parkes Observatory. It is a 64 metre wide dish that towers impressively over a farmland. You can also enjoy a coffee with snacks or a meal at the reckoned and commonly-visited Dish Café. The observatory also has free BBQ and picnic facilities.

Henry Parkes Centre

Another place of interest for many people is the Henry Parkes Centre that is on the northern side of town. It includes the Parkes Visitor Information Centre and four unique collections. At this centre you can explore the Parkes Motor Museum, Henry Parkes Museum, The King’s Castle Elvis Exhibit and the Antique Machinery Collection.

Cooke Park War Memorial

The Cooke Park War Memorial is at the centre of town and was dedicated on April 23rd 2004 to all the military personnel who were martyred, imprisoned or for any reason couldn’t return home. The memorial especially mentionsParkes Shire residents’ names thatscarified their lives during theWorld War I & II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

Memorial Hill

Another popular tourist attraction at Parkes, NSW is the Memorial Hill which is the top vantage point from where you can enjoy the magnificent views over the town and surrounding countryside. From here you can also easily spot the 33 metre high Shrine of Remembrance which is the most visible landmark of the place.
